Wood Carved
- The Demetz Art Studio has been working with wood for over 130 years, following the tradition of wood carving in Val Gardena. Wood carvings are valuable for their timeless beauty as they become more precious with age.
- The kind of wood used to create these fine works of art is called Linden wood or Lime wood (Lat. Tilia). It is imported rom Eastern Europe, cut, and kiln dried in the workshop. After that, blocks of wood get glued together to form the block needed for the size of the statue to be carved.
- Linden wood is used for carving because it is not too hard, fairly white in color and when professionally kiln dried, it does not make small cracks later. The latter is much more likely to happen with pine wood. Only the heartwood of the tree trunk is used because it is almost knotless. That way the wooden statue will have an even, homogeneous surface and a fine woodgrain appearance.
- In Val Gardena, a Northern region of Italy, the tradition of wood carving dates back to the 17th century
- The colors used in the studio are regular oil colors. Even though the statues look polychrome, the artists use only 12 basic colors. These get mixed by hand to obtain endless varieties and shades. The final result depends on the pigments, the technique, the manual skills and the experience of the master painter. As a result, each statue is a unique piece in its coloring and design.
Fiberglass
- Made from a mixture of fiberglass and resin, these statues are lightweight, weather resistant and easy to maintain. Thanks to these characteristics it makes them a popular choice for both, indoor and outdoor settings.
- Fiberglass statues in a monotone bronze, aluminum, terracotta or white marble finish are made using a special technique that lets them withstand the outdoor elements and makes them suitable for outdoor display.
- Colored fiberglass statues, instead, cannot be guaranteed for outdoor use. They are hand painted with oil colors using the same traditional technique as with wood carvings. Any kind of colors applied to a fiberglass statue will fade when kept outdoors.
Each artwork is uniquely crafted and handmade to order; it may be slightly different in shape, size, texture, and color from what is shown in pictures. All work can be customized in color and dimensions.
Full custom works are also available. To see samples of our custom statuary visit our renovations & interior site here.
Colored finishes and wood are not recommended for outdoor use. Fiberglass in a monotone finish is suggested.
