Who Was Padre Pio?
Padre Pio (1887–1968) was an Italian Capuchin friar canonized in 2002 for his profound spiritual gifts and devotion to Christ's suffering. Born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, he became one of the Catholic Church's most venerated modern saints, known worldwide for his stigmata—the miraculous appearance of Christ's five wounds on his body.
Historical Significance
- Received the stigmata in 1918 at San Giovanni Rotondo monastery, where he spent 50 years in ministry
- Celebrated Mass with extraordinary reverence, often spending hours in prayer and confession
- Founded the House for the Relief of Suffering, a hospital dedicated to serving the sick and poor
- Performed countless miracles attributed to his intercession, earning him the title "Saint of the Impossible"
